Toure to City for £20m?!; Arsenal not Going Anywhere

Word around is that Arsenal are on the verge of agreeing a £20m fee with Manchester City for Kolo Toure. If this is true, Arsenal should seal the move now. In no way is Toure worth that much and receiving £45m from City in the span of a week and a half would be a very attractive proposition to any Arsenal fan. While many would take the ‘he still won’t spend it’ approach, just think about Wenger’s options going forward. No matter what he says, he is aware what the squad needs. And while he says ‘the squad is good enough’, and it clearly is to finish in the top four (more on that later), he knows it’s not perfect. His main traits, loyalty and unbridled optimism, have caused problems for Arsenal fans in recent years and as of right now, there is no proof that any of it is coming to an end. However, he’s never had £45m at his disposal. And despite his cautious spending habits, here are a few things he will do.

He will look at all possible replacements for Emmanuel Adebayor. After losing his flamboyant hit man to an eventual rival, Wenger has taken a lot of criticism. While this is by no means new to the Frenchman, it has to be assumed that he is considering options. With his two most talented strikers both suffering more than their fair share of injury problems, one has to think a deal is imminent. Whether it is a potential 30 goal/ year candidate like Klaas Jan Huntelaar or more of an experienced squad player for a cheaper price, remains to be seen. There have been reports that Arsenal are interested and some claim they have already made a bid. Despite the fact that none of these reports seem to have any substance, where there’s smoke…

Secondly, Wenger is looking into the holding midfield role. As this position is one of the less flashy on the pitch, one can find a good DM for pretty affordable price, something that should definitely appeal to Wenger. Rumored to the position have been Wigan’s Lee Cattermole, St. Etienne’s Blaise Matuidi, Stuttgart’s Thomas Hitzlsperger and a quick return for Matthieu Flamini. Lorik Cana and Felipe Melo were also linked before signing with other clubs. This position is a sensitive subject for Arsenal supporters as it is the side’s most glaring void, and nobody seems close to filling it. Where the Gunners need an experienced and ruthless ball winner, they have Abou Diaby, Denilson and Aaron Ramsey, Wenger seems to prefer Alex Song in a central defensive role, so he will see less time here. This one is more difficult to diagnose as there seem to be very few offers put out by Arsenal. For whatever reason, Wenger seems sure that the answer lies within his squad. To his credit, he could be right. This position seemed a liability two years ago, until Flamini stepped into it and was one of Arsenal’s most valuable players. Once again this one is up in the air, and until I see anything on the Official Website, I won’t believe any of the stuff being bandied around.

Lastly, did I miss something? Unless I read wrong Arsenal are at a huge risk at losing their top four spot to City. Whoever thinks that City have ‘a good chance’ at leapfrogging any of the top four clubs in the first season after their lopsided makeover, is utterly delusional. Can you please explain to me why City’s signings of Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry have made the club 23 points better? Three of them are strikers. I know, I know, they’re starting to spend on defenders now that their attack has been addressed. But as of yet, quality defenders aren’t exactly lining up to join up with Mark Hughes’ side. Furthermore, winning atmospheres aren’t purchased. Even Chelsea finished fourth before the Abramovich era started. It’s an eventual process, not an immediate one. Arsenal has not finished outside the top four in Wenger’s tenure with the club, and they don’t appear close to doing so now.

How much worse did Arsenal really get by losing Adebayor? Sure he scored 24 Premier League goals (6 of which came against Derby) two years ago, and every Arsenal basher loves to spout his record over the past two years because they know his form last year left a lot to be desired. The club just got paid £25m for a selfish, lazy, prima donna who, lets face it, had a lot of trouble converting straight-forward chances. Nicklas Bendtner was a more efficient striker than Adebayor was last season. Instead, while people engage the sensationalist ‘Another Arsenal Exodus’ trash, Arsenal supporters and players are getting ready for a very legitimate title challenge. Yes, Arsenal finished 18 points off the pace last year and yes, the Gunners were even a full 11 points behind third place. But lest you forget, Arsenal’s talisman Cesc Fabregas missed 3 months due to injury, Andrei Arshavin only played half of the year, while Eduardo and Tomas Rosicky saw less than 300 competitive minutes between them.

Importantly, Arsenal tallied up 9 points out of a possible 18 in games against the rest of the big four. Liverpool led the pack with 14; Manchester United earned only 5; and Chelsea, a paltry 4. Last season’s struggles were not down to not being good enough in the big games as so many people have carelessly declared. It was down to a young team not putting away lesser opposition. Losses to Hull, Fulham and Stoke indicate that the problems lay more with the doldrums of the Premier League season. Those who claim the young guns suffered on the big stage must not have done their research.

With the addition of Thomas Vermaelen and the emergence of Kieran Gibbs, Arsenal are starting to develop a good range of depth in the defensive third, this to go with their slew of attacking options up front and, specifically, on the flanks. Arsenal finished 9 points above fifth place despite only getting 22 Premier League appearances from their captain. So to clarify, getting Fabregas back for a full season is what is going to push Arsenal out of the top four? Does Adebayor’s departure really outweigh Fabregas’ return to form in some people’s eyes? If so, they need to go to Spec Savers.

Arsenal don’t currently have the squad to win the title.

20m? Did you pull that number out of thin air or your arse?

Biggest problem is almunia. We desperately need a shot stopper

Right! And Arsenal only lost one game of the last 22 (or something) in the league. There is no reason they will be an less good next season than in the second half of the last.

Since when does 25 and 20 make 55? Maybe you should go to Specsavers.

great article, spot on

i believe losing toure could be a good thing. one, we get the reported 15million pounds, which can go towards the acquisition of another striker and a CDM. and two, the issues between gallas and toure will be gone, leaving gallas to get on with being one of the best centre halfs in the league.

we need a tall commanding centre back, a ball winning centre mid and a keeper first and foremost. we have players to score goals. as long as we stop conceding goals and defending like children, we can score one goal and win a game. we get outmuscled too easily these days.
teams used to fear playing us becasue we were physically initimdating. now it is the other way round. we are close, but not there yet. this team is growing up together which can only be a good thing, but need a spine to the team.

This clubwith current squad is good enough next season to compete with Man C, Villa and Everton for 4th place.

We need to keep Toure! Sell Eboue and Senderos. De Rossi of Roma will fill midfield perfectly. Another striker is not neccessary Van Persie can play upfront with Eduardo, Bendtner, Vela or even Arshavin as deep lying striker. There is a concern of Van Persie getting injured particularly with Eduardo not back to full fitness.

ARSENAL BOARD SHOULD CONSIDER RIGHTS ISSUE
Kroenke and Fiszman are killing the club. These two guys are only interested in making money but not helping the club. Where is AST? Have they been bought by Kroenke and Fiszman? Wenger is a great coach but being frustrated by Kroenke and Fiszman. It is only the current board members (Kroenke and Fiszman) that have become big stumbling block towards the progress of the club. For heaven shake, why did they refuse the proposal of Usmanov to reduce the current choking debt? This board needs to rethink again and come up with a viable means of reducing this choking debt!!! Why in this modern world do you reject such offers with even a rider of underwriting the issues is not fully taken. I would like all sensible Arsenal fans globally to look at the scenario below:
Suppose the new rights of 500 million rights are issued at an issue price of 20 pounds!!! What will be the results of the issue?
Utilization of Funds Raised from Rights Issue Pounds (Mns)
New Funds 10,000
Less Emirate Stadium Loan 450
Less Apartment developments 200
Net Balance 350 mn

The club will raise a total of 10 billion pounds or 10,000 million pounds. This will definitely be raised due to underwriting of the entire rights issue. How will this amount be utilized?

Arsene will enjoy pounds 350 million in developing the club further with 50 million pounds can be used to buy new players, 100 million pounds can be used for youth and academy development that will continue to develop young talented players, 50 million pounds can be used for building the club global brand name and developing global merchandise network outlets that will continue to bring new funds through sales of arsenal merchandise in the global market.
In the net analysis, the club will still have pounds 150 for any other use with a clean book without debts at all.
Please the board members look at this and come forward with a working formula that will ensure that no single shareholder should own more than 30%. The shares can be sold to all Arsenal fans in the whole world to only Arsenal fans.
I appeal once again to the board to relook at the proposal.

Keep Toure and play him as the CDM i think he would excel there. Play either Vermaelen, Senderos, Djourou, or even Song with Gallas.

I think we need to keep the squad together and buy another striker.

The only way I would consider selling Toure to sity would be if they offered Micah Richards as part of the deal. Then i would except.

Arsenal’sproblem is incompetence of Stan Kroenke and the board! They’re just after business, not a glorious Footballclub….

Why is everyone down on Almunia? He is a very good keeper and getting better every season…he makes fewer mistakes than Lehman did and is not a pain in the ass in the locker room…Fabianski will be very good in a few years…we are fine in the net…and we are fine at striker, too…Give bendtner a run of games and he will produce twice what Adebayor did last season…Eduardo will be fine…v. Persie will be fine…If toure goes, then we should get micah richards in the deal…we should get a defensive midfielder like cattermole…that is all we need…Senderos can go, but i would hold onto Eboue for his versatility…keep Traore and Gibbs as well…

City paid 22m for Adebayour who scored regularly for Arsenal for two years, and will score 25 goals for City this season because we have proper wingers. This means we will score 15 more goals this season than last .(Caeicedo and Evans scored 10 so subract their goals)

If City get Toure for 15m he will be a bargain because he will help City concede 10 goals less than last season so we will concede 40 goals. This will give City a goal difference of 28.Do you think Arsenal will do better? Therefore with these two Arsenal purchases….it will take City above the sixth place that they have targetted to 3rd.

Tevez will add more goals, perhaps 10 and points, perhaps 5,as will Barry,RSC ,and finally Lescott……Arsenal should be very scared….but then so should Liverpool,Chelsea and United….

haha Ive been meaning to go

HUNTELAAR WILL BE GOOD FOR ARSENAL AND HE HAS THE KLAAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sell toure if offer comes in range of 20 million comes, no problem.
Sell Eboue for 10 million, but purchase hangeland with 10 million +senderos and sakho or Zapata for 8 million+silvestre.
buy Inler for 12-15million.and KJH +RVDV(on loan for a year) for around 20 million.

Guys we need to slow down, don’t we all agree that we need more experience in our team, why then are you clamoring for the sale of kolo toure and eboue, yes they may have fallen short last season but nothing stops them both from coming back even stronger this season, all these talk of the ACN like it’s a competition that’s lasts a whole season guys its only 3 weeks isn’t that why we bought veleeman as cover we need strength in dept forget about the differences btw gallas and toure they are professionals they don’t have to be friends to play together and I’m sure Wenger will find the best combination at the back, as for eboue he is a very versatile player who was coming back to form towards the end of last season,he has lots of experience and can act as cover for sagna and even on the wings even though we all agree its not he’s strongest position,we need to keep our team together and add some quality into the team, like hunteelar we all know he is pure class,I know we have van perse, eduardo Bendtner and vela, but lets not forget injuries as well and then ask ourselves which of these guys can give us 20+ goals a season, head the ball effectively and act as a point man when we come up against tough defences ,this guy fits the bill perfectly and in my view would be a quality addition, what Wenger needs to do now it stop dwelling get out the check book sign hunteelar now before someone else does, sell senderos add the cash from that to what’s left and then get us a rock solid defensive midfielder to protect our back 4,then and only then will we be ready for the new season.lets just hope Wenger and the board are listening, but as we all know they never do and that’s where the real problem is.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion. in my humble opinion we should be taking a big chunk of that money from the sale of Adebayor and offering it to fulham for Hangeland. that is priority. a central defender who is big, does the basic things a defender should do and can organise the players around him. i show u chelsea at home and in fa cup semi and man u in CL semi – our defence were all over the place, and looked like they were pooing their pants everytime the ball came near them. forget huntelar, he will do nothing that RVP, Bendtner, Eduardo, Arshavin, Vela and Theo cant do. We need a solid centre half to play next to Gallas. Remeber gallas at chelsea alongside terry – solid.
