Overachieving in Denver

There are five undefeated teams in left in football. Three of them (NY Giants, Indy and New Orleans) could have been predicted with relative ease at the beginning of the season. Minnesota is also undefeate, and could have been predicted if you felt like he-who-must-not-be-named was going to perform. But then there’s team number 5…….Denver?
No one thought the Denver Broncos would be here, at 4-0 heading into week 5. They have Kyle Orton as their QB. I repeat, Kyle Orton. They have Brandon “Sometimes in practice I don’t feel like catching the ball” Marshall as their star receiver and best player. Their defense is comprised of a combo of old players and inexperienced ones. But here they are.
But I hate to break it to you folks, but this fairy-tale is about to end. Against the New England Patriots next weekend, the Broncos will lose, it’s going to happen, Brady being his old self or not.
Let’s take a look at the Broncos’ four victories. They had an unbelievably flukey win against a so-so Bengals team. They crushed the Browns and Raiders, but then again, so could Bowdoin College (who had the worst-ranked defense of any college in the United States last season after its fifth-game). And then they beat the Dallas Cowboys not because they played well or anything (well, Marshall did) but because Tony Romo was straight-up bad.
So what happens when they play a real team next week? They’ll lose. And then they’ll lose in week 6 to the Chargers. And in week 8 (after their bye) to the Ravens. And in week 9 to the Steelers. So while the Broncos might be living the dream right now, five weeks from now they’ll be sitting on a mediocre 4-4 record and a four-game losing streak. They could finish 8-8, which would put them second in their division, and with an outside shot of making the playoffs. But even if they do, let’s be clear, the Broncos are not good.

[...] have not been on that bandwagon, and if you read this article I wrote a couple days ago entitled, “Overachieving in Denver” you might note that I had already penciled in the Broncos to be 4-4 after Week 9. Well that’s [...]
